What is ABA?

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. It is a method of therapy that teaches functional behaviors and new skills. The goal is to promote appropriate behaviors and discourage inappropriate behaviors.
ABA began in the work of two leading UCLA psychologists, Ivar Lovaas and Robert Koegel. Lovaas devoted nearly half a century to ground-breaking research and practice aimed at improving the lives of children with autism and their families. In the 1960s, he pioneered applied behavior analytic (ABA) interventions to decrease severe challenging behaviors and establish communicative language.
Incredibly, ABA therapists skillfully implement this vast scientific study about how children learn and behave best. They adapt the research to each child’s unique strengths and weaknesses and harness this knowledge to unlock the potential inside of each child with autism.
